Barrow, containers and Morecambe: a polemic on regional planning

Abstract

Three problems which currently face Britain are what to do about Barrow-in-Furness and the Furness Peninsula, whether to construct a barrage across Morecambe Bay and the implications of the increasing use of containers in ocean freight services. These three problems can be considered in isolation, but it is improbable that any sensible answer to any of them will be obtained in this way. Considered together, however, it becomes clear that a simultaneous solution to all three problems is possible. Let us consider each in turn.
