Abstract

Mr van Wyk commented on Professor Glaser’s paper in the light of the South African situation and experience. He said that South Africa was at present committed to what Professor Glaser described as the romantic concept of the Volk, rather than the rationalist concept. The South African government had been committed to this concept more or less since 1948 in its policy of establishing homelands for various Black ethnic groups. The government was, however, not at present thinking of separate homelands for the 2 million Coloured people and the 750,000 Indian or Asian people. Nor was the government thinking in terms of separate homelands for the approximately 2 million Afrikaners, the 1 1/2 million English South Africans and the other smaller national groups, such as Portuguese, Germans, Jews and so on.
