Abstract

In the earlier chapters we investigated patterns of residential location by using the simplifying assumption that each city has one single central workplace. In later chapters we shall relax this assumption, and study patterns of location in cities where there are workplaces other than the central business district (CBD). As a necessary preliminary to this study we shall show in this chapter that, when workplaces are scattered over the city, wage rates should decrease with distance from the city centre. The empirical evidence on this is not conclusive, however.
