The Product as a Service Business Model: Performance over Ownership

Abstract

Do people really want to own cars, or would they rather have access to transportation when and where they want it? Does an office manager really care what light bulbs are lighting the office space, or is he or she mainly concerned with providing cost-efficient lighting for workers? Is a consumer really interested in filling his or her cupboard with a cache of clothing, or does he or she simply want to be able to wear fashionable clothes? Increasingly, customers are choosing the latter option: buying a desired function or performance rather than a specific product.
