Abstract

Until recently, manufacturers had few options for the raw materials and energy needed to make their products other than those derived from virgin resources, which were often toxic, polluting or nonrecyclable. That’s because the companies providing those inputs were tied to the linear model, supplying energy generated from fossil fuels, materials based on highly toxic chemicals, or fibers made via resource-intensive processes.
