Abstract

In recent decades, the competitive context has become increasingly complex, variable and dynamic. This tendency finds expression in phenomena like globalization and technological acceleration and convergence. To cope best with the dynamism and uncertainty of such a competitive context, firms are required to be bigger, more flexible and more open-minded. These characteristics are not easily found in the Italian business context, where firms are typically small, highly specialized and individualistic. In periods of economic downturn such as the one that is still affecting the Italian economy, the quest for critical mass, flexibility and a less individualistic approach is particularly important for the survival of enterprises.
