Abstract

In the course of the last few decades the economy has experienced a rise in the so-called nonbank banks1 that engage in shadow-banking practices. Their activities are similar to those of classical banks. They may take deposits (under different schemes) and give loans. But they do so outside the regulated banking system, in the shadow of traditional banking.
