Abstract

Quality refers simply to a state in which operations or things exhibits the traits and functionality that they are supposed to, yet this concept that so many take for granted as an implied contract that should be minimally expected of the offer has been branded in many ways. The US Army states that it is their implementation of Six Sigma quality management, originally developed by Motorola, achieved a savings of $110 million during its third year of operations in 2005. Six Sigma, however, does not present anything that is particularly new or unique compared to its predecessor, Total Quality Management (TQM), which was developed by the US Navy in 1984. Even TQM is little more than a variation on the quality management analyses and tools developed by the American Society for Quality in 1946 as a way to bring quality management techniques by the US military during WWII to the private sector. Prior to WWII, even the origins of the modern bullet in 1846 has its roots in the perceived need to mass-produce a standardized, and consistently high-quality product, where prior to that it was common for individual manufacturers or even soldiers to fashion their own balls for use in muskets and pistols that had no standardized bore diameter.
