Abstract

This chapter explores how firms in technology-based industries may gain or lose their market leadership over the industry life cycle. There has been a significant amount of research on the persistence of market share leadership and changes in market share among leading firms. Much of this research, however, has focused either on industry-level factors or on firm-level factors, but to our knowledge there is a lack of studies that take into account these different levels of analysis jointly when explaining the causes of changes in industrial leadership. Based on empirical evidence in the global mobile phone industry, this chapter shows that market leaders are likely to be dethroned by those challengers that compete more aggressively and are more capable of adapting their capabilities to exploit the advantages offered by technological discontinuities.
