Abstract

This planet, and the 7 billion people on it, face some big challenges, the challenges of climate change; poverty; fundamentalism (of all kinds); gender, social, and economic marginalization; human rights abuses; resource scarcity; human migration; privacy and freedom on the internet; global health; biodiversity; and the rights of all. None of these issues can be addressed effectively unless enough state and non-state actors align and work together. Whilst much is wrong with the world, there is some good news. The way that unlikely coalitions have eventually come together over recent years to fight against problems such as HIV/AIDS, malaria, and landmines, and to fight for issues such as maternal health, female education, and health and safety—this is encouraging. Encouraging too is that the majority of governments around the world would today recognize that they owe their existence to at least some element of democracy and a social contract with their people, rather than seeing it as the divine will of god or as a hereditary right.
