Tapping into the Muslim Market

Abstract

In the spring of 2012, I was entertaining a Syrian friend in Hong Kong. We were in Central and wanted to eat halal food. I knew of restaurants on the Kowloon side where the Pakistani community is concentrated, but not on Hong Kong Island itself. We ended up eating at an Ebeneezer’s kebab outlet in Lan Kwai Fong where a paper certificate from Hong Kong’s Islamic Community Fund vouching for the restaurant’s halal certification was displayed prominently in the window. It wasn’t a fancy meal, but for Muslim visitors to a non-Muslim country, takeaway at the local kebab store or Indian restaurant is standard fare.
