Abstract

Chapter 2 deals with the sustainability theme in universities and with the main factors that have contributed to the principles and characteristics of the sustainable university (including Principles for Responsible Management Education) and the central elements of the two approaches to sustainability strategy (technical-technological and strategic-organizational). Consequently the strategic-organizational approach is investigated by analysing: governance systems and strategy, along with stakeholder engagement; performance measurement and evaluation systems, along with key performance indicators (KPI) of sustainability and the centrality of the outcome indicators in the set of KPI; and reporting systems, along with sustainability reports and the new approach of integrated reporting. Therefore, two themes are dealt with, which point out the commitment of universities: the carbon management process (along with the carbon footprint) and green universities, along with sustainability networks and rankings.
