Abstract

Adventure is the desire to explore and discover, and through this to challenge ourselves and grow. It’s a desire we experience from our earliest days. Think how readily children create their own adventures, making games out of exploration and discovery. They venture into forbidden places, propelled by curiosity and uninhibited by the sense of risk we gain with experience. They build dens and hideaways, creating new realms in which they are in charge, and from which they can challenge the ways of the world. They dress up as doctors and soldiers, princesses and wizards, exploring their identity and the roles they could play in life. They probe about in realms they might later shy away from – pulling earthworms from the soil and examining them with more glee than squirm. The pleasure they find may have little to do with the worm itself – nor would they really want to wake up and find they’re on the frontline. But through play, children expand their own horizons. They awaken and respond to the desire for adventure itself.
