Abstract

It is well known that touch can be used to convey sympathy, as one might hug a friend who just lost a loved one, and that it can be used to show affection, as one might hold hands with one’s sweetheart. But touch can do much more than that. Studies have shown that even while blindfolded people can identify another’s emotion with remarkable accuracy based on a single touch lasting only a few seconds. The notion of touch as powerful and able to convey more than just pressure is nothing new; in artworks, the Biblical scene of God imparting life to the body of Adam is usually represented as the two figures touching each other. In the field of medicine, touch is considered an important part of establishing a connection between a patient and a caregiver.
