Audition

Abstract

At the 2010 Oscars, Morgan Freeman was selected to hand out two of the lesser known awards, those for sound editing and sound mixing. Possessing a world-famous voice himself, Freeman narrated an action clip from the Batman movie The Dark Knight. He replaced the sounds and music that normally accompany the clip with commentary and descriptions of what was happening. The difference was startling. What had been an edge-of-your-seat chase scene had been transformed into something still artistic but also terribly boring. It lacked the vividness and intensity that had made the scene part of one of the top movies of that year. When the Oscars were awarded, the audience was aware of the great importance of sound editing and sound mixing in giving a movie a certain tone.
