Abstract

Social enterprise 1 has recently been propelled to the agenda of the European Commission (EC) and has become a top discussion item of policy makers, social enterprise practitioners and support organizations, social innovation groups, and social investors. In the midst of a major economic recession, Europe needs new approaches that address the current ills in an innovative and sustainable manner. The EC views social enterprise as a model with high potential to respond to these challenges and make Europe more market competitive, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable. Expectations are high for social enterprise to deliver, and the commission seems determined to do everything it can to provide the support mechanisms and regulatory framework to make this happen.
