Abstract

My neighborhood florist does not look very much like a criminal. A gentle guy with a shaved head, you can see him mornings wearing an apron, clipping the stems of fresh roses or freesia in his small shop on a side street. But he almost ran afoul of the law a few years ago, on Mother’s Day no less. His crime: setting up a placard on the sidewalk outside his shop advertising that he would stay open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A city inspector happened by and warned that it was illegal to stay open so long on a Sunday, Mother’s Day or not. Close earlier or be fined, the inspector warned.
