Abstract

Being told someone ‘was born with a silver spoon in his mouth’ or is of the Hindu caste Shudra, with the function of serving others, prompts people to make assumptions. This may relate to the ease (or diffi culty) with which they have reached their position in life or the strength of their aspirations and even abilities. If the reality does not conform to expectations, it sparks interest in their past and what it is about them or what’s happened to them that might explain why. The privileged son has founded his own company with no fi nancial backing from his family; the lower caste Indian has risen to the position of manager. How come? What prompted or enabled them to follow these paths?
