Abstract

The Sultanate of Oman, similar to many oil-producing nations, is increasingly focusing its efforts on growing the private sector in order to reduce the country’s reliance on petroleum revenues. Creating an environment that promotes and facilitates entrepreneurship is a difficult task that requires support being made available not only for business start-ups but also for the expansion and development of existing enterprises. The Sultanate of Oman also has an increasingly youthful population who, while having benefited from accessible higher education, will require employment opportunities in the near future once they graduate. As highlighted by Bhutta and Asad (2007) in their study of the health of SMEs in Pakistan, researchers have “identified the employment potential” of small and medium-sized enterprises, making them of increased interest to policymakers across the globe.
