Abstract

China’s foreign aid began in June 1950, within a year of the People’s Republic of China (PRC)’s establishment in October 1949. It has been regarded as one of the most prominent means of economic statecraft for China, despite major domestic and international challenges — such as the Sino-Soviet split at the end of the 1950s, the Great Cultural Revolution between 1966 and 1976, implementation of the policy of Reform and Opening-up since 1978, and China’s rise as a major power up to the present (Jiang, 2010, p. 226). China’s foreign aid has been linked to its foreign policy objectives — either implicitly or explicitly — for more than six decades.
