Abstract

Democracy is defined by Webster’s Unabridged Dictionary as “a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people or in their elected agents under a free electoral system.” In a more general sense, it is “a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges.” In other words, democracy is a system of governance that regulates the relationship between the state and the public in a way that enables the governed to elect their governors and participate in the making of decisions that affect their lives, while empowering them to hold their representatives accountable for their deeds.
