Abstract

This chapter identifies some of the critical differences in the historical background of the two regions that are relevant for understanding their economic development since the middle of the twentieth century. In particular, the chapter examines differences in the impact of colonialism, the role of cultural factors, and the influence of ideology or development thinking in each region.
