The Holy Spirit is Key to Salvific Kingdom of God Management

Abstract

Given the growing interest in spirituality in management among both scholars and practitioners, one might expect a considerable literature that relates the Holy Spirit to management. However, this is not the case. While there is growing interest in spirituality, it seems that there is little interest in a spirit (or in spirits). For example, in looking among articles and books specifically on spirituality, it is striking how few mentions there are of a specific (external) spirit, or God, or higher power. And in most instances where the word “spirit” is mentioned, rather than refer to the spirit of God, it refers to ideas like the “spirit of capitalism,” the human spirit, or team spirit, or a spirit of cooperation. One examination of one hundred books related to “spirituality in organizations” showed that fewer than 20 percent mention God or a higher power. Reference to God, or a spirit, is even lower in scholarly articles on spirituality in secular journals.1 A similar lack of mention of “spirit” is also evident among consultants in the area.2
