Abstract

In 2011, as the number of people on our planet surpassed 7 billion, the United Nations forecast that the world’s population will keep on rising until around 2050, when it is expected to plateau at the 9 billion mark. Rising population statistics can often generate fear about the future of our civilisation. Are there really sufficient resources on our planet to support that many people without causing mass malnutrition? Will the increased CO2 emissions from an extra 2 billion people cause the polar ice caps to melt, resulting in extensive flooding and forced migrations of entire populations?
