Abstract

Inevitably, the effectiveness of a port-integrated logistical system depends on the productivity and efficiency of ports, other components of the supply chain and trade industrial organization; this chapter will address these issues. First, port and supply chain productivity and efficiency will be investigated, because they serve as key performance measures of port-focal supply chain management. However, when compared to firm focal supply chains, port-focal supply chains contain ports that are not only production facilities, but are also transactional ones. Hence, it will continue to address the transaction cost economics of port, transport and international trade, pertinent to organizational dynamics of port-focal logistics and supply chains. The chapter concludes with a port efficiency and performance assessment, by investigating an empirical study on the performance benchmarking of global container ports.
