Abstract

‘Sukarno feed your people.’ In one of the most haunting moments of Peter Weir’s acclaimed 1982 film ‘The Year of Living Dangerously’, the photographer Billy Kwan hangs out a banner with these words in his desperation at his country’s plight, as President Sukarno’s motorcade approaches. His protest is in vain, as Indonesian security police break into his hotel room and throw him out of the window to his death before the motorcade arrives. The film — based on a book by the same name written by Christopher Koch — was banned from being shown in Indonesia until 1999.
