Abstract

The aim of biomedical research is to improve the health of individuals through more effective medical diagnostics, clinical care, and therapeutics as well as through public health practices oriented to the community. The pharmaceutical industry and government sponsors are increasingly moving clinical research to developing countries. Between 2002 and 2008, the number of U.S. Food and Drug Administration-regulated investigators carrying out biomedical research outside the USA increased by 15% annually while the number of U.S.-based researchers declined by 5.5% (Getz 2007).
