Abstract

The starting point of the research project at W. Greenwell & Co. was the publication in 1959 of the report of the Radcliffe Committee on the Workings of the Monetary System. One of the recommendations was that more financial statistics should be published. Accordingly, in 1960 the Bank of England (the Bank) started its Quarterly Bulletin and in 1962 the Central Statistical Office began its monthly Financial Statistics. Both were of limited use at first. Coverage of data was gradually extended but, as with most other statistics, trends were often more important than absolute values and it took time to build up adequate series of past data. In 1967 we, that is, the author and the team at Greenwell, judged that sufficient data had become available to warrant a thorough investigation into their possible use for gilt-edged investors.
