Structure and Strategy in the Nordic Power Market

Abstract

Finland (in spring 1995) and Sweden (in January 1996) implemented electricity market reforms very much inspired by the Norwegian initiative, but also modelled on the UK and the liberal EU initiatives. With the recent liberalisation of Sweden and Finland, in addition to the early market reform in Norway, the Nordic countries (with Denmark gradually attached in a semi-liberal position) now constitute an internal free trade market. The three Nordic countries are thereby putting into practice a more far-reaching liberal market system which eclipses even the EU Commission’s most ambitious plans for an internal European Market.
