Abstract

China is the largest grain producing and consuming country in the world. It is also one of the largest corn producing and consuming countries. Corn has traditionally been a food grain in China. With income growth the consumption of corn as a food grain has been declining over a long period of time, but it was not until the mid-1980s that corn became essentially a feed grain. In 1996 over three-quarters of corn in China was used as feed. This marked a radical structural change in grain demand in China.
