The Evolution of BPR

Abstract

BPR has been one of the most discussed concepts in the business and academic literatures throughout the 1990s. Originally presented as a tightly defined concept by authors such has Hammer and Davenport, BPR has been subject to a variety of interpretations and modifications. This chapter examines how the concept of BPR has evolved from one concerned with ‘clean slate’ radical performance gains into one which recognises the importance of context and multidimensional BPR strategies. Finally, the chapter examines how changes in technology and the business environment are keeping the concept, which has been regarded as a fad, alive.
