Abstract

The Electricity Industry is undergoing a revolution. The transition to a competitive environment demands new patterns of thought and flexibility, requiring companies to swiftly react to markets and competition. Liberalisation has led to unbundling and to new actors entering the market. A number of countries have established power pools or exchanges, and in many countries privatisation has transformed companies entirely. Additionally, in many markets both domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions are also taking place as a result of a growing interconnection of markets and changing strategies. These changes are summarised in the box below:
