Abstract

The fundamental catalyst and ingredient for industrial development and the economic evolution of the developing countries is energy. Ever since the Industrial Revolution harnessed steam power the impacts have been enormous both in terms of the advances that have been made and the impacts on society and the environment. Even before the emergence of oil as the prime energy source coal was already driving the industrial engines of the world to create new industries, technology, employment and wealth, leaving in its wake scars on the communities it served. Much of the pollution and environmental impacts, which perhaps were not fully appreciated at the time, we now understand far better.
