Herman Melville’s Billy Budd: A Study of Character

Abstract

Herman Melville was born in 1819 and died in 1891. His Moby Dick (1851) sold poorly and garnered him little recognition during his lifetime. He stopped writing in 1866 when he took a job as a customs inspector in New York, When he died in 1891, he left an uncompleted manuscript entitled Billy Budd: (An Inside Narrative). His widow saved the story, along with other writings, mostly verse, and his granddaughter inherited the unpublished works. The publication of Billy Budd in 1924 created a Melville revival, and this last story was acclaimed a masterpiece, as was the earlier Moby Dick.
