Abstract

In any well-developed society, some things are taken for granted by its members. This includes the prevailing philosophy regarding the nature of the society, its relationship to the divine, the dominant set of social relations, and the rules defining acceptable behavior. We call these elements of the ‘deep structure’ of a society its social cosmology. As long as they are taken for granted and not questioned, they will tend to be mutually reinforcing—giving people the sense of what is ‘natural’ and ‘normal’.
