In: Banking in the New Europe

Abstract

In this chapter we focus our attention on the banking sector in the Netherlands. The Dutch banking sector represents an interesting case study since the Dutch market has been, well before the adoption of the EU regulations related to the SMP and the Europe 1992 target date, relatively small, open, liberal and efficient. At the same time, the SMP has had a profound impact due to bankers’ anticipatory reactions to internal market legislation. Moreover, the introduction of the euro is likely to have significant consequences for the banking system in the Netherlands. These consequences will be dealt with in the following paragraphs.
