Abstract

As a typical settlement in the lowland rice belt in Laguna Province, East Laguna Village was characterized by the early (since the late 1960s) and complete adoption of modern rice varieties. In addition to its proximity to the IRRI (about 20 kilometres away), the rapid diffusion of modern varieties (MV) was supported by the extension of a national irrigation system that began to service almost all paddy fields in this village in 1958. This chapter aims to trace the process of MV diffusion and its impacts on rice yield, inputs and productivity.
