Population Growth and the Evolution of Households

Abstract

East Laguna Village has been characterized, above all, by very high rates of population growth for nearly a century. Rapid population increases have put pressure on fixed land resources, especially since the 1950s, when the opening of new land for cultivation was stopped. This strong population pressure has been counteracted to some extent by developments inirrigation infrastructure and new rice technology. These forces have interacted with each other under land reform programmes and ever-increasing urban influences to create a unique class structure in this village. This chapter traces this process from the perspective of demographic changes.
