Object-Mediated Communication

Abstract

Whereas in Chapter 4 we focused on the very act of constructing together, in this chapter we focus on how our playful constructions can mediate serious and sincere conversations. Here we focus on the meaning of the objects in the centre of the communication. (The communication itself is here a traditional verbal exchange, but in Chapter 12 we will extend the verbal notion to include dramatic techniques.) Clay, gouache, bricks, watercolour, markers, oil pastels, LEGO bricks, play dough, coloured pencils, paper of different kinds, connecting materials (glue, string, scotch tape, string, chains) and just about any material that we find useful for making hard and soft symbolic representations can be used to mediate communication. Some are more convenient than others, though.
