Abstract

One evening in July 1984, Tom Clausen, then President of the World Bank, telephoned me in London to ask if I would take over the position of executive head of the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank Group. I accepted immediately and remained in that position for over nine years. As the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, investing in and lending to private companies for the purpose of economic development, the IFC was and is deeply involved in the issues which are the subject of this book. This chapter contains some personal reflections on my experience at the IFC and on the role of the Corporation in the development business.
