Abstract

The legal difficulties confronting Ismini, introduced in Chapter 2, are a telling example of what happens to individuals and their communities when property rights are not secure. Ismini inherited a small property in Greece which her family acquired before 1891. Her ancestors had been among the people who originally purchased the fertile valley and forest lands, home to ancient Avlis, from the Ottoman Turks. Property in this community is quite valuable because of the lushness of the land, its cultural and historical heritage, and its proximity to Athens and the Aegean coastline.
