Abstract

The objective of this chapter is to examine the relationship between inward investment in the UK and the industrial policy of the British government. The chapter is divided into two parts. The first part analyses the role of FDI in the UK economy, and the second part looks at the evolution of UK industrial policy and the role of inward investment in that policy. The analysis of FDI gives a broad picture of the highly significant role of foreign MNCs in the UK economy, which not only reflects the historical openness of British FDI policy, but also influences the context within which present industrial policy is formulated.
