Abstract

More than any other greenfield investment in the UK, Nissan has had the greatest impact. In political terms, Nissan vindicated for the Conservative government Mrs Thatcher’s ideological struggle against the trade unions. In economic terms, Nissan and the follow-on investment of Honda and Toyota have prevented the collapse of the British car industry and Nissan is propping-up the North-East manufacturing economy. In global terms, Nissan symbolised the new production practices and philosophies that were causing a sea-change in the world automobile industry. In social terms, the costs and benefits of Nissan’s manufacturing system for workers is a hotly debated subject. But of interest in the first part of this chapter are the lengthy negotiations that clouded Nissan’s investment in the UK. We argue that only through conceptualising the political economy of bargaining relations can we understand the negotiations surrounding Nissan’s decision to invest in the UK.
