Abstract

The global economic recession that took place in the early 1980s affected Costa Rica’s growth conditions due to the disproportionate increment in the fossil fuels bill and the fragility of the exports level. The presence of socio-political conflicts in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua complicated the regional economy even more and all of this was reflected in low real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rates and in the persistence of problems in external payments.
