The Regional Innovation System in Emilia-Romagna

Abstract

Since the 1980s the Emilia-Romagna constitutes a benchmark for specialists in industrial districts and more generally in local production systems (Piore and Sabel, 1984). Since then there has been a remarkable evolution of industrial leaders that have been establishing their brands in global markets and have been controlling supplies via global networks. Many firms in this position sold their businesses to multinational companies, which ended up buying and controlling the whole production network. As a result, by the end of the 1980s, a significant process of consolidation of leaders occurred by means of mergers, acquisitions and cross-exchange of minority shares (Bianchi and Gualtieri, 1990).
