Setting up an Effective Manuscript-Review Process

Abstract

My chapter is on journal infrastructure, an important issue for editors and authors alike. How the review of a paper is managed will determine repeat business, the tone, and content of the word of mouth advertising, and the overall reputation of the journal. As authors, we all have been involved in both pleasant and not so pleasant review processes. As the editor of the Journal of Management (JOM) from 2000 to 2002, one of my top priorities was to ensure all authors received a developmental, expedient review of their work. To accomplish this goal, I undertook various steps to develop the system we used to shepherd a paper through the review process at MOM. In the following pages, I will describe this system and then offer some insights about the review process that every author should know.
