Abstract

A revolution is taking place in scholarly publication. Fueled by rapid technological advances and an exponential diffusion of the Internet, the way scientists exchange knowledge is experiencing its most dramatic change since Gutenberg invented type printing 550 years ago. Yet, social scientists lag far behind their colleagues in physics or biology in reacting to these changes. In this chapter, we present developments in electronic publishing and some of the opportunities and challenges that face prospective editors and authors in this new academic reality.
