Abstract

European integration has been distinct from other forms of regional integration (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation/APEC; North American Free Trade Association/NAFTA) not only because of the far-reaching transfer of legal competencies, functions and activities from the national to the supranational level. This process has also been accompanied by the establishment of a comprehensive framework of political institutions at the supranational level. The result is not just a larger space for (almost) unrestricted economic transactions, but a completely new system of political governance, which has been shaped by a unique institutional architecture.
