Abstract

Interoperability of a software service or a product appears to be only one aspect of the larger issue of coordination amongst software-writing firms. The system that a software must be complementary to, is itself evolving, in other words a software introduces a variation and consequently a change in the system Richardson (1997)??? talked about. A system appearing to be robust often quickly gives in to an emergent standard. Product life-cycles are extremely short, and exchange of technical information between software firms helps this concurrent coordination. Inside a firm, especially if it is large, product planning is coordinated through another kind of information. Beyond these two variants of information, there must be another creative variant of information which sets a disequilibrium in the system interoperability. In order that the new technology that this disequilibrating software is bringing in can become operational in the market, a bevy of firms must commence coordination in anticipation – coordination in expectation (Rosenberg, 1976). This appears as a new mode of coordination. ‘Business models’ has been a recent attempt in such coordination.
