Abstract

Economists have traditionally considered four factors of production: land, labour, capital and entrepreneurship. The entrepreneur was the idea generator and the risk-taker who combined the other three factors in creating an enterprise. Apart from own-funds, the entrepreneur’s ability to raise funds from outside is crucial in bringing the idea to fruition and this is where the role of the venture capitalist (VC) comes in. The specialized nature of the activity of funding entrepreneurs has resulted in three sources of funding:
